MUNCIE — Delaware County officials still hope to get some use out of a $5-million rail spur in a far western industrial park.

The county commissioners this week agreed to pay up to $46,300 to CHA Engineering for easement and other work to build a road leading to the rail spur.

"It's been a long process," said Brad Bookout, the county's economic development officer. "I thought two years ago we would be further along."

The rail spur was built in the Park One industrial park at Ind. 332 and Interstate 69.

The rail spur, built at a cost of $5 million, including about $3 million in federal government funding, was built to service the Brevini Wind company, which in 2008 announced plans to build power-generating wind turbine parts at the Park One plant. Brevini failed locally, however, and the rail spur completed in 2013 by the county to carry huge pieces of equipment has never been used.

By 2016, Brevini had repaid more than $1 million in incentives to the county in lieu of jobs created since it was announced in 2008.

The rail spur was built to carry huge pieces of wind turbines that Brevini never built, but county officials have hoped that the spur, which connects to a nearby rail line, could be used by local and area companies for shipping.
