Evansville City Council: Gun laws, school safety are not our jurisdiction

John Martin, Evansville Courier & Press

EVANSVILLE -- The Evansville City Council will not write or vote on any resolution pertaining to gun laws or school safety, Council President Jim Brinkmeyer said Monday at the outset of a council meeting.

Brinkmeyer, D-6th Ward, said city officials care about those issues, but they are outside of the council's jurisdiction.

Members have many other issues to focus on, Brinkmeyer said.

At previous meetings, the council heard public comment from citizens about the issue. Councilman Dan Adams, D-At-large, had said he was seeking public input about what a resolution should state.

A resolution is not a law but rather a statement of position. A few other locally elected bodies in the state have approved resolutions.

But Brinkmeyer and Adams said Monday the City Council has decided to not even take that step.

Those who wish to have their voices heard on issues related to school safety and firearms should contact local state legislators or the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. Board of Trustees, which also met Monday evening.

A few people in attendance planning to speak to the City Council about school safety or guns filed out after Brinkmeyer made the statement, although some stayed and planned to speak anyway.
