Frontier to launch nonstop Indianapolis/Austin flights in April 2018

Susan Orr, Indianapolis Business Journal

Indianapolis International Airport passengers will soon have another option for nonstop flights to Austin, Texas.

Frontier Airlines will begin offering nonstop service between Indianapolis and the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on April 10, becoming the third airline to announce nonstop service between Indianapolis and Texas tech hub since the beginning of 2017. There previously was no nonstop service between the cities.

The Frontier flights will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays, the city of Austin announced on Friday.

The Indianapolis flight is part of a larger service expansion by Frontier in Austin. The airline plans to add nonstop service from Austin to 14 cities in April, including not only Indianapolis but Detroit, Seattle, Milwaukee, and Portland, Oregon, among others.

Indianapolis International Airport officials had targeted Austin in recent years as a missing link in its nonstop-service portfolio. The city is considered a tourism hot spot for its music and culinary scenes. Its burgeoning technology culture also makes it a key destination for business travelers.

In May 2017, Allegiant Air launched twice-a-week nonstop flights to Austin on Mondays and Fridays. And, two days before Frontier’s service begins in April, Southwest Airlines will begin seasonal Sunday-only nonstop service to Austin.

Both Indianapolis and Austin are among the 20 finalists for Amazon Inc.'s HQ2 corporate campus, which could bring 50,000 jobs and $5 billion in local investment to the winning locale.
