Planned Parenthood looks to Elkhart after Fort Wayne closure

Jordan Fouts, Elkhart Truth

ELKHART — After the closure of its Fort Wayne health center, Planned Parenthood in Elkhart is ready to step in to meet the need, the regional CEO of the organization says.

Christie Gillespie, president of Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, announced the closure of the Fort Wayne location Monday. She said the organization was unable to secure a new location after the termination of its month-to-month lease due to harassment and intimidation by anti-abortion activists.

A sign on the door of the Allen County center, where she said Planned Parenthood had a presence for more than 80 years, directs people to the Elkhart and Mishawaka locations. Gillespie said she expects many women will choose to make the trip to the Elkhart center, which is at 505 S. 3rd St., Suite 160.

“We anticipate that might happen, and our staff at Elkhart is prepared and ready to step in,” she said by phone Tuesday.
