Two Wabash County publications were sold last week to a media group based in Fowlerton.
The Paper of Wabash County and the North Manchester News-Journal were sold last Friday by the Reeses, who have owned the weekly publications for over 40 years.
“The times we had were just great, when you think back,” Wayne Rees told The Paper.
The newspapers were sold to Hometown Media Inc., an affiliate of Hoosier Media Group and based in Fowlerton. President and CEO of the company Don Hurd, a former journalist and Ball State graduate, said he’s been a Hoosier all his life with a respect for local news.
Hurd said he became involved in the newspaper business as a paper carrier at the age of 11 for the Times Union in Warsaw. He said owning a newspaper was on his bucket list, which he crossed off when the opportunity first presented itself in Benton County.
The company now owns 10 newspapers across Indiana. As the overseer of Wabash County’s two weekly newspapers, Hurd said he’d like to “continue the quest” of the Rees family by providing “hyper-local news.”
“When people open our paper, they’re going to see local names and local faces,” he said.
The Paper and News-Journal publish a new edition every Wednesday.
