Tax abatements for new Anderson homes top $10 million value since program began in 2015

ANDERSON — The city has reached a milestone of more than $10 million in new residential construction since 2015.

The Anderson City Council on Thursday approved two new residential tax abatements through the three required readings. One is for a local couple that considered moving to Fishers and the other is for a Fishers man moving to Anderson.

Greg Winkler, executive director of the Anderson Economic Development Department, said there were four requests in 2015 for residential tax abatements. That number rose to 16 last year and should be surpassed in 2018, he said.

Since 2015, the City Council has approved residential tax abatement requests for the construction of 40 new homes with a value of $10,161,875.

Winkler said the tax abatements granted in 2015 will start to expire this year.

The council approved the request of AnthonyWilson and Alexa Troutman for the construction of a $257,745 house in the 6500 block of Turf Way in the Apple Downs subdivision.

Wilson said the couple sold a house in Edgewood and considered moving to Fishers.

“With the offering of the tax abatement incentive we decided to stay in Anderson,” he said.

The council approved a three-year tax abatement for Bernard Lee Jr. for the construction of a house valued at $170,000 in the 6500 block of Rangeline Road, east of the Apple Downs subdivision.

Lee said he was relocating to Anderson from Fishers.

He said the home will be energy efficient with poured concrete walls that will be 1 foot thick and serve as insulation.
