Indiana University Police Department incident report
More than $300,000 was stolen from the Indiana University Foundation, but few other details have been released to the public since the incident was discovered nearly two months ago. Details such as how the money was stolen, who is accused of taking it and what corrective action has been taken still have not been made public.

“The financial audit, the forensic audit, rather, is approaching a close, and so we’re not quite ready yet to provide any detailed information,” said Dan Smith, president and CEO of the IU Foundation.

IU Foundation leadership learned of the embezzlement Aug. 21, but the incident was not reported to IU police until Sept. 3. The IU Foundation employee who allegedly confessed to the crime was fired immediately.

Smith referred a reporter to Chuck Carney, university spokesman, for additional questions. Legally, IU and the IU Foundation are separate entities, but their missions are intertwined.

The IU Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit soliciting donations on behalf of IU. This nonprofit status means the IU Foundation is not subject to public record requests.
