Kokomo — The parent company of Elder-Beerman plans to close its Kokomo Mall store and open a Carson Pirie Scott in the Markland Mall, the company announced Thursday.

The Bon-Ton Stores Inc., owner of Elder-Beerman and Carson’s, says it has signed a letter of intent with Simon Property Group Inc. for a 60,000 square-foot location in the Simon-owned Markland Mall.

Mary Martin, a spokeswoman for the Markland Mall, said Carson’s will move into the former Macy’s store on the west side of the building. In addition to Sears and Target, the Markland Mall will again have three anchor stores.

“Hallelujah,” Martin said with a laugh.

Kokomo Mall’s administration office was closed Thursday, and attempts to reach a representative for comment that afternoon were unsuccessful.

The Bon-Ton Stores said in a press statement the new Markland Mall location would provide increased traffic and visibility.

“We are pleased to announce this transaction with Simon affording us the opportunity to offer our customers in the Kokomo market a brand new Carson’s store,” Bud Bergren, president and CEO of The Bon-Ton Stores, said in a press statement. “We believe the move to Markland Mall will enhance the total shopping experience for our customers in this market.”

Demolition has begun for renovations at the future Carson’s, Martin said, which most recently was Nirvana, a new age retailer. Nirvana has moved to a smaller location in the mall.

Carson’s will have more merchandise than Elder-Beerman, The Bon-Ton Stores says, and the department store will have wider aisles and new fitting rooms, among other changes.

The new store should open by November.

Attempts were unsuccessful Thursday to reach a spokeswoman for The Bon-Ton Stores for additional information on the move and name change.

The Bon-Ton Stores, which has headquarters in York, Pa., and Milwaukee, operates 275 department stores. Stores under the corporate umbrella include Bon-Ton, Elder-Beerman, Carson’s, Herberger’s, Younkers, Bergner’s and Boston Store.
