Toledo, Ohio, artist Calvin Babich, on Saturday, installed his sculpture “28” near the entrance of Culbertson Boulevard as part of the 2020 First City Public Sculpture Exhibition.

A year ago, the local art guild, a nonprofit organization located at 316 Main St., selected Amy DeLap and Andrew Jendrzejewski — both retired Vincennes University art professors and the owners of Art Space Vincennes LLC — to lead the First City Public Sculpture Exhibition.

The exhibition, slated for completion this fall, will present seven outdoor sculptures by artists from across the nation.

This most recent installation is an eight foot stone column sculpture from Babich, a stone mason by trade.

His sculpture sits near the north entrance of the Riverwalk, at the corner of Hart and First streets, and derives its name, “28,” from the four visible sides of seven carved-out cubes that appear to be stacked vertically from one piece of limestone — totaling 28 individual cubes.

Jendrzejewski said, “each of the visible sides contains playful carvings, collages of other kinds of stone and even paint, so they earned the distinction of becoming part of the title.”

Too, Babich says, “stone has an undeniable presence,” adding that he is passionate about using “any type of stone and any type of treatment from carving with great detail to fabrications with rocks carved by nature.”

As passersby first glance at the gray limestone column, many will likely ask what it’s supposed to mean, but the artist has left some room for interpretation.

Jendrzejewski describes the work as a monument to the child-like playfulness we often forget as adults.
