For the first time, the City of Logansport is funding a study to attract more lodging in the community.

Last week, the City Council Finance Committee agreed to advance a proposal to fund a hotel study based on a recommendation from Logansport-Cass County planning executive director Arin Shaver. An ordinance was passed Monday at the City Council meeting authorizing the use of $10,000 from the County Economic Development Income Tax (CEDIT) fund for the study.

In 2018, the Cass County Tourism Commission paid for a study that showed occupancy rates of current hotels in Cass County.

“This information helped hotel developers to start looking at Logansport as a potential development site,” Shaver said. “The study that is currently being discussed is the next step in providing these developers and our economic development directors information on why hotels should choose Logansport.”

According to Shaver, the study will help identify and gather factual information on competitive facilities within the area and broader competitive market. That data will include overall market demand, supply, rates, occupancy, operating costs and projected trends.

A written report containing the conclusions of the feasibility study will be provided to the city as well as financial projections for the proposed hotel and related venues.

In the event the feasibility study concludes that the site is suitable for the development of a resort hotel, it will also provide strategic direction for the development and operation or marketing and sale of the site to a developer.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said developers who are already considering additional hotels for the community are receptive to the study.

“This is an opportunity for us to potentially attract more people traveling through Indiana to come through our city and see what we’re all about, and it would add value-added dollars to our economy,” he said. “Downtown, the east end and the Hoosier Heartland Corridor at 18th Street and U.S. 35 are all prime areas under consideration. Given our proximity to Indianapolis, South Bend and West Lafayette and the number of sporting events in those cities in particular, the demand is there.”

Logansport’s most recent new hotel project was the Holiday Inn Express, the city’s largest hotel.
