MUNCIE — Muncie Mall's survival has been in question since the departure of Carson's and Macy's. Once JCPenney closes, the shopping center will be without an anchor store.

There was hope when the mall gained new management, the Woodmont Company.

"New management means new ideas, new vision and a new start for Muncie, and I guarantee you brighter days are ahead," Mayor Dan Ridenour said when the mall's ownership shifted in May.

Since reopening in May, however, Muncie Mall has continued to see storefronts shuttered amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of Monday, the mall had about 17 permanently closed stores and restaurants, with three others preparing to lock their doors for good.
