RICHMOND — The Indiana University Board of Trustees on Friday unanimously approved building a new competition venue for volleyball and wrestling.
The $17 million project calls for a venue with seating for up to 3,000 spectators to be built in the parking lot between Cook Hall and Fee Lane on the north end of the Bloomington campus.
Most home matches for both teams are now played at the University Gym near the intersection of 10th Street and the Ind. 45/46 bypass. It is one of the few athletic venues not located within the IU athletics campus, which is bound by 17th Street to the south, Fee Lane to the east, Dunn Street to the west and the Ind. 45/46 bypass to the north.
Bringing the competition venue for these sports to the athletics complex will put it within walking distance to the campus' northwest neighborhood, which includes McNutt, Briscoe, Foster and Collins residence halls.
It will also free up space in the IU Technology Park. New facilities, such as IU's Cyber Infrastructure Building, have brought more people and vehicles to the area.
