MUNCIE -- When John Mitchell was laid off from BorgWarner a few years ago, he didn't realize he was experiencing the effects of globalization -- the distribution of goods, services and culture around the world -- firsthand.

That's changed now that he's read Richard Longworth's Caught in the Middle: America's Heartland in the Age of Globalism.

"Everyone needs to read this book, especially if they live anywhere around here," he said. "I just thought my layoff was one layoff. You know, it only affected me and my family. But now I'm learning what these job losses are about, not just for me, but for everyone in the Midwest. These job losses are a part of a larger change in the economy."
