Vincennes schools accepts church's offer on elementary building

Jenny Peter, Vincennes Sun-Commercial

It was not about the money.

It was about preserving one of the oldest school buildings in the county.

The Vincennes Community School Corp. accepted a $25,000 offer from First Christian Church on the old Washington Elementary School, 2134 Washington Ave., on Monday.

The church’s offer was considerably below the building’s appraised value, which is $171,000.

But the sentiment of most board members was that the church’s offer was the best that the corporation had received, five times the bid which the Church of Victory had submitted last week, and it was better for the community that the school building be in the hands of an organization that would put it to good use rather than have it continue to sit unused.

The main part of the building dates back to the early 20th century.

School board member Bryan Thais cast the only dissenting vote; he said he was worried that the corporation could be making a mistake by taking so little for the property.

He commended the church for its plans to open up a supplemental pre-school program there, but he also hesitated because the property wouldn’t be going back on the city’s tax rolls if it is sold to a non-taxable entity.

First Christian Church hopes to partner with Pace Community Action Agency Inc. and other local pre-kindergarten programs in opening a supplemental school for underprivileged children, ones unable to enter other local programs for various reasons, to be called the Academy of Exercise and Life Skills.

The proposal said the pre-school would focus on “school readiness” and preventing childhood obesity.
